It is a sudden ophthalmic disease that causes bilateral blindness in one or two days without previous manifestation of any sign. Immediate ophthalmological examination does not detect any alteration of the internal structures of the eye until several weeks later.
The cause is uncertain, although several reasons are listed, including: hormonal diseases, excess of internal ocular pigments, metabolic alterations, etc. It generally affects middle-aged females, sterilized and with some degree of obesity. There is no treatment for this condition, blindness is irreversible.
